Who run the world? Girls! Mom and I are the prevalent female force at home while Dad provides constant support, love, and meals. Strong ladies lead our lives every day and lending strength to our sisters is what truly enhances society. This same sentiment was on the mind of Meena Harris when she founded the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign.
Inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem and created in response to the 2016 election, the mission is to bring awareness to a multitude of social causes that center around the advocacy and empowerment of women. Proceeds from t-shirt sales go towards organizations such as The United State of Women, a national organization focused on women’s rights and gender equality, as well as Justice for Migrant Women, and Girls Who Code which aims to bridge the gender gap in the computer science industry by providing tech education and training to young girls.
Harris, a Harvard educated lawyer and niece of Vice President Kamala Harris, began the campaign as a month-long endeavor. Five years later, the message has proven to be timeless as she has expanded the campaign to include additional awareness movements such as Phenomenally Black, Phenomenally Latina, and Phenomenally Indigienous. Mom received this top as a gift from her college best friend and instantly felt like a superhero when she put it on. Mom wanted to pay it forward, and it has since become a gift for the inspiring women in her life – her sisters and her boss – in honor of the underrepresented women of the world.
Look good. Do good. Feel good. A gift wrapped in empowerment needs no occasion.
